  • Hydroquinone: A tyrosinase inhibitor that reduces melanin synthesis. It is effective but typically used in limited treatment courses due to the risk of ochronosis (skin darkening) with prolonged use.

  • Azelaic acid: A gentler alternative with a good safety profile, particularly useful for patients who do not tolerate hydroquinone.

  • Kojic acid and niacinamide: Adjunct ingredients that support pigment regulation with lower irritation potential.

  • Retinoids: Vitamin A derivatives that accelerate cell turnover and help disperse pigment in the epidermis. Best introduced gradually, particularly in patients with sensitive or darker skin.

Chemical Peels

How Can Hormonal Pigmentation Be Prevented From Recurring?
